Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was born on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan. Madonna is
a mass media phenomenon, dancer, actress, singer and musician. She is the most successful female
singer-songwriter of all time. Raised Roman Catholic, Madonna has a horde of siblings, and an
occasionally has used her confirmation name, Veronica. She was born to an engineering father and
housewife mother. Madonna was the oldest of eight children and was named after her mother who
died when she was 6.
Dancing is where Madonna had her beginning and earned her a scholarship to the University of
Michigan. Madonna left the University after two years to make her name in the city of New York.
In search of the big dream, nude Madonna got on a bus to New York in 1977, searching for her
future with a band called the Breakfast Club. Legend has it that she set down in Times Square
with only thirty-five dollars in her pocket.
Since then, she has become the ubiquitous presence on magazine covers, MTV, VH1, films and just
about any outlet that will display her clothed or otherwise. Then, there's the music. In the last
15 years, she has released a dozen albums, from which 11 singles have hit No. 1 on the charts.
She has made as many films as albums, from her scene stealing role in "Desperately Seeking Susan"
through the unpretentious and charming "A League of Their Own", to the appealingly grandiose
"Evita". Give a good director and a great soundtrack and the ensuing hypnotic
transformation is something an alchemist would kill for. She has even managed to make "American
Pie" her own, her jeans slung precariously low, in front of a giant American flag.
The belly button-baring, pointy bra wearing, material girl, has taken on a new role.
She has become the sedate, subdued, and spiritually centered woman, a hardworking and privacy
guarding mom devoted to raising her children. She finally seems to have found a serious match with
her marriage to British movie-making paramour Guy Ritchie, and father of her second child.
Once Madonna once used publicity to sell herself and her music, and now she is more selective.
She is the owner and manager of her own studio "Maverick". And, with such stars as Alanis Morissette,
her business interests have also soared. No longer a poor dancer, Madonna is a successful business
woman, singer, actress, musician, and mother.
